Is This the End of Cheerfulnuts?

If you still didn’t know, I’ve just been banned from Google Adsense. To find out the whole story, you can read my hub about how Google dumped me. To summarize, I had received an email one uneventful afternoon of September 10, 2011 from Google Adsense. It said that my account “poses a risk of generating invalid activity.” I was pretty shocked because I didn’t violate any Google policy and I consider myself as a responsible webmaster. What’s worse is they didn’t give me any proof in their claim (Their explanation is not sufficient). I feel like a girl being dumped by her boyfriend without him giving any reason. Didn’t I deserve to at least know why I was being banned? It feels surreal. Since that day, I have been keeping an eye on my email just in case Google sends me another one.

Doing My Homework

Despite my shock and misery, I did my homework. I gathered as much information as I can. I had been seeing suspicious-looking sites containing links to my sites. These sites are suspicious because 1.) I’ve never visited them, 2.) I have no idea how my links got there, and 3.) According to an app called Web of Trust or WOT, these sites have poor reputation. As much as I would want to see what these sites are, I refrained myself from clicking these sites for fear of infecting my computer with virus, malware, and spyware. After a couple of gloomy days of data gathering, I finally submitted the appeal form to Google. The next day, I received a reply from Google telling me that they’ll investigate the matter but they do not promise to reinstate my account.

My Life After the Google Ban

A few weeks later, I still got no response from Google. I tried to get my mind off Google by creating more articles for my site (HubPages). However, that didn’t stop me from thinking what I did wrong. It was driving me crazy! I started to formulate a back-up plan: If I didn’t get my account back, I would be using my sister’s Adsense account for my site.I tried to be patient and didn’t use her account right away. I was afraid that using her account would get her banned as well. Maybe I was being illogical, but the ban was too shocking that I get paranoid at every little thing.

Another Shock

On September 27, 2011, my sister also got the dreaded email from Google. She has been banned, too. My sister wasn’t that shocked though since she was already half expecting it. She is an active member of WebAnswers, a revenue sharing site where you earn through posting questions and answers. She has been seeing alarming number of WebAnswers members being banned from Google Adsense. These people are clearly not spammers or bots. In my short stay in the site, I had seen these people giving quality answers to people. They are some of the great contributors of WebAnswers. Their statistics reveal that some of them had already posted hundreds of questions and answers on the site. I don’t see any reason why they are getting banned, except that all of them came from fraudulent countries. There are “rumors” saying that people from certain countries – whether or not they violate Google Adsense’s TOS – are being banned from Google. It caused some panic among WebAnswers users. If such claim is true, then it is so unfair. I’ve been seeing people saying, “I’ll be next”, and to my surprise, I’d find out a couple of days later that they, too, had received the same letter from Google. Unbelievable.

Putting All Eggs in One Basket

What I’ve learned from this experience is not to put all your eggs in one basket. I have a Blogger and a HubPages acount. I thought these are enough, but I didn’t realize that I had been putting all my eggs in one basket. Both use Google Adsense. My mission now is to look for other ways to earn online that don’t use Adsense.

Goodbye?

The sad thing is, after people have found out about my disabled Adsense account, they were telling me how sorry they were. I can feel their sadness, and it makes me even sadder. I’ve been writing online for six months now. To me, six months is quite a long time. I know that I can remove my articles from my sites and put them elsewhere (where I can earn using other programs), but doing so removes all the comments that I have already received. I don’t want to lose them; they mean so much to me. I like my readers, I like the people I follow, and I don’t want to leave everything behind. It seems like moving on is so hard. Will this be the end of cheerfulnuts? I hope not.

Update

March 14, 2012

Hello! It’s been months since I’ve been banned by Adsense. I’ve also been a Hubber for one year! Hurray! Happy anniversary cheerfulnuts!(Now where is that cute little 1 year accolade?) Anyway, you may wonder how I’m doing now after the Google ban. Well, my skin-and-bones body is gaining quite a bit of weight now (I think it shows life can still be good even WITHOUT Adsense). I joined Squidoo and had moved some of my hubs there. I’m also spending more time on my personal blog. Plus, I have created a new review blog on Asian dramas and movies.

Unfortunately, my sites aren’t as successful as my HP site. For the past several months, I’ve only earned a few pennies with the other ad programs that I’ve utilized. It’s all because of the little traffic that I’m getting. I miss being here and seeing my traffic grows. The good old days… Sigh…

Don’t worry. I have no plans to give up. If I learned new ways to earn with other ad networks, I will surely share it with you. See you around!

I really hope Google decides to reinstate your account. I was actually teary eyed reading this. I will miss you and I just can't believe this is happening to so many people. Please make sure to let us know which site you do decide to use. There are some sites that do not use Google Adsense, but I am not as familiar with them as some of the other members on WebAnswers. I hope everything works out for you!

Thank you Jeannie.:( I'm sad, but I'm happy, too. I'm happy that people like you care. Even if all my earnings are now gone, I realized that I haven't wasted my six months. At least I have met nice people like you, and I have improved my writing skills. I have learned a lot.

My sister and I are currently looking for other sites. I'm still thinking what to do with my hubs. Maybe I will transfer some hubs to other sites. I will let you know which sites we have chosen. I will probably post links here to my new sites. But one thing's for sure: I won't delete my account (unless HP decides to delete it for some reasons). We will surely miss you and the rest of HP and WA community. Thanks so much!:')

I am very sorry to hear this has happened for you and your sister. I hope things work out for you. I will be interested to read what you find out about different ways of earning money on-line if you make a Hub about that.

Serena Gabriel 7 months ago

Cheerfulnuts,

I'm in the U.S. and I just received a message similar, but different to yours yesterday, Sept. 27 - same as when your sister received hers.

It's hard to understand what it's about - the message from Google is purposely vague, it seems. I don't think it's about clicks. They seem to think I've placed their ad code at porn sites or something - which, of course, I did not. I only publish here, triond and bukisa.

Maybe this is all some big computer error?

But, they owe me money and they have a reputation of doing this to people right before they're supposed to pay them.

Incidentally, I was kind of expecting something to happen, too - but only because they don't seem to have been registering hits correctly for about the past three months. My earnings were up and down dramatically from one day to the next. I heard they were having reporting problems - lots of people were complaining about this.

So, in reality, they probably owe me a few hundred dollars and this is just their way of keeping everything and getting away with it.

@Melovy: Thank you so much for your kind words. I will post links to my new websites. I will try to be proactive. Nothing is really stable on the internet, so writing at several platforms is something I should've done in the beginning. Thanks for dropping by. I appreciate your comment.:)

@Serena: I'm sorry about what happened to you. If you didn't tell me that you're from the US, I would assume that you live in a "fraudulent" country. This is really not fair. If ever we have done something wrong, Google should at least tell us what our violation is. It's hard to keep reading things like this. It scares publishers, and no one knows what they should and shouldn't do. I hope this is just an error. I hope Google will reinstate our accounts.

Btw, have you sent your appeal?

Serena Gabriel 7 months ago

I immediately sent an appeal, however, a form was difficult to find and the only one I could find related to disabling due to fraudulent clicks, which is not what I was accused of. As I said, I have no idea what I'm accused of and you can see the original e-mail from them at my post. It gives no explanation, whatsoever apart from alleging that I have, personally, done something to endanger Adsense's advertisers. This is a criminal tactic, in itself, to reverse the blame onto the victim.

I don't care to be re-instated. I want to get as far away from them as I can. And, I would like to be paid the money they rightfully owe me. And, I would like an explanation for what they did. I won't get one because there is no explanation that would not implicate them as the white collar criminals they are.

I have seen a tremendous amount of denial on the part of a lot of publishers, though. If anyone doubts Adsense's bad reputation, they should just pop the term "Google Adsense scam" into a search engine and see how many people they have robbed through fraud.

I've been prepared for this day ever since I began hearing these stories, mostly from marketers. You've find a litany of Adsense horror stories at Warrior Forum. They usually wait until people are making a couple of thousand dollars a month before they shut them down and steal their earnings.

I understand that it is shocking to think that such a large company behaves this way, but look at all of the fraud in the mortgage markets, the fraudulent securities disaster which is what led to the mortgage crash, the behavior of credit card companies, the withdrawal of pensions, etc. etc. We are living in a time where this type of institutionalized criminal behavior is so rampant it is considered normal, apparently.

I hope this isn't the end for cheerfulnuts. Just because we got banned from google adsense doesn't mean that we should give up on things we like to do best - writing. We already lost our earnings so let's not give Google adsense the satisfaction of seeing us bid goodbye to the online writing sphere. Besides, adsense is just one way to earn money through writing. There are many ways to earn money online - have you tried affiliate marketing? With those great writing skills cheerfulnuts, a little more knowledge on affiliate marketing and you're good to go. By the way, I'm also a web answers user who got my adsense disabled around the same time as your sister's. Just so you'd like to know, I'm josh from Web Answers.

Thank you so much Edmagneto/josh. Your kind words mean a lot to me. I've never been successful with affiliate marketing, but I will try it. You are right. There are many other ways to earn money online. I will do my best and won't let Google ruin my online career. Please keep us posted about your future plans. Although this incident is shocking and quite traumatic, I'm still hoping that we'll be able to recover soon. I'll be glad to hear success stories from people who were banned. Take care and good luck!

Very useful hub, I'm sorry you got banned and I agree you should keep writing you have amazing hubs. Voted up and useful, thank you for sharing.

Serena Gabriel 7 months ago

Cheerfulnuts,

I'm not sure - maybe someone can clarify - but I thought you could apply Kontera to hubpages, if you hook in with your profile page URL.

Maybe someone else knows for sure. I'm not even sure this is permitted. I just thought I saw something about it somewhere here at hubpages.

I've never made a dime here with Adsense. I have far better luck with Amazon.

barbergirl28 profile image

I have always had a problem with Google Adsense... they can just ban your account and not pay out a single dime of what you have already earned for what they deem suspicious behavior. Yet, they don't need to tell you what is suspicious behavior. HOwever, you mentioned webanswers, which I was actively participating in for awhile. I guess it is a good thing that I am not using it anymore. Not because I don't like it, just because I got bored with it.

However, on a good note, you don't have to ban your Hubpages account. You can still use the Hubpages ad program, which in my experience, has actually proven to be more fruitful than google adsense. I think (but I am not positive) that Hubpages measures the amount of people that actually visit your page and not on someone clicking on an ad like Google Adsense. I was amazed when one of my articles had a real popular time and it seemed I was getting so many views, only to check google adsense and see that I made a whoopping 13 cents. yet, my income on Hubages continues to grow.

Unfortunately that doesn't help you with blogger. But, I hope Google is able to do an investigation and set this situation right!

@barbergirl28: As you have said in your comment on my other hub, yes, you cannot earn with HP Ad Program without your Google Adsense account. I really like the HP Ad Program, and I wish we can use it even without an Adsense account. For now, I will try to look for other ways to earn online. Thanks for dropping by and for you concern.:)

Serena Gabriel 7 months ago

Cheerfulnuts,

It looks like HubPages stopped using Kontera some time ago. So, that was old info. I found.

If you write reviews on books, movies and other products, the Amazon affiliate program isn't too bad.

Wow, I always wondered where you and seriousnuts went! I haven't seen you active for a while and I was going through people I follow and saw that you hadn't published in 3 months. I have seen a lot of people from other countries on HubPages say that they have to wait 6 months and publish so many articles before they can be accepted for Adsense. This is the first time that I have heard the warning, “poses a risk of generating invalid activity.” I am sorry to hear that! I hope you stick around for a little while longer! I always appreciated your comments and I hope that you can work this out. Best of luck.

cheerful nuts, I've bene hesring lots of stories of people being banned from google adsense. How has no class action lawsuit been filed against them? I heard that they actually have an adblocker app, which can allow no ads to show up when yoju look at your sites. This might be a good thing to have to show google that you want to play by the rules. Also, you mentioned other programs. Do you know any specificlaly?

There are states here in the USA where Google Adsense doesn't go. The states don't like them for whatever reason. This kind of thing happens to people like you because of dishonesty.

Realize . . . other than crooks, we have enemies who further their cause by ripping us off. The internet was not ready for the influx of users and activities that have inundated it. Watch out, the powers that be want to reign it in.

The best way to make money in this flea market is to sell products, not catch clicks.

Great visuals by the way.

Thanks WD Curry111 for the info. Yeah, perhaps selling products is a better way to make money online. Anyway, I'll still continue to write on my blogs, though I won't expect to earn anything. I don't want to get disappointed again. Writing online is quite an enjoyable activity.:)

Thanks for the visit and for liking my visuals.;)
